Why are most older houses in Portland, OR so ugly?

I am moving to Oregon and have been looking at some houses. The question I have is - why are the houses so hideous? They seem to all be a bungalow, single-level style? Is there any reason why they aren't the normal colonial, or larger style homes I am used to seeing?
