What are some books similar to this?

You could try the Wizard of Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin. I have read the first three, "A Wizard of Earthsea", "The Tombs of Atuan" and "The Farthest Shore". They are mainly about one wizard who finds his way in the dark, war-ridden world of Earthsea. The second one also features a female as the main protagonist, I liked that. I am not sure where they land in terms of time-line, but they are great dark fantasies.
